The BFI is very much in favour of the donation of goods over money.
As you may appreciate, one of the biggest constraints to development and the undertaking of projects on Palm Island is the fact we are an island! We only have a ferry for passengers to Townsville twice a week and the light planes fly every day but are small and do not take much cargo, there fore it is very hard to go shopping!
There are 2 barge services, one from Townsville, Riverside Barges, Palm Island Barge Service, with 3 weekly runs, and the Lucinda based Day and Day shipping which runs daily. However the added cost of freight means many projects are cost prohibitive and cannot be undertaken. Therefore, we are asking that if you can donate goods that we currently need, and/or organise transport to Townsville or Palm Island, we would be very grateful!
Of course we are prepared to take money as well, and will happily undertake to purchase the goods we need to undertake projects
Our request for donations of goods is also an attempt to utilise products and goods that may otherwise be wasted or unused. We are aware that many people reading this web site will have things themselves, or perhaps you work for an organisation that has surplus/off cuts/end of stock runs etc that may be able to be donated. If this is the case and shipping is a constraint we may be able to help. It’s all about working together after all!
We believe that by asking for actual things rather than money we are also demonstrating our commitment to being a practically based organisation, undertaking community and environmental workshops and working bees as regular activities.
The following is a list of goods and products we are currently seeking. The list is regularly updated, and is as titled, a Wish list (extensive and obviously wishful!)
