Palm Island UNDER-8s DAY 2009

Palm Island UNDER-8s DAY 2009 was held at St Michael’s on Tuesday the 2nd of June. It was a fantastic day, and fun was had by all. The theme for this year was Creativity - Let it Happen.
The kids from Bwgcolman Pre-prep to year 3 and St Michael’s kids prep to year 3 enjoyed such fun activities as: making fairy bread, playing with gooey slime, face painting, disco/rap dancing, fruit loop necklace making, crazy rainbow hair spray, rainbow parachute, play dough and one of the favourites was the sponge throwing at Mr Joe/ Hulk.
After all of the activities were finished, we concluded Under-8s Day with a delicious sausage sizzle and yummy rainbow icy cups.this celebration.
Thank you to everyone who all helped to organise the activities for this celebration.

School Student Council announced
Monday, June 22. 2009
Bill Blackley was the Master of ceremonies. Cr Ruth Gorringe spoke to the students about leadership. She said we could be good leaders at home and in the community. Aunty Deanne Sibley awarded the badges and certificates to the 2009 Class Captains and Student Council.
After the ceremony the Grade 10 class had a BBQ to celebrate their achievements.
The grade 10 class would like to thank everyone who helped them.

Nine Girls get the big one :)

Nine girls from Year Six at Bwgcolman were recently chosen to travel down to Victoria and have a holiday at Cottage by the Sea at Queenscliff.
The lucky girls were: Shonelle Castors, Rasharna Prior-Bounghi, Malanee Tanner, Tessa Friday, Tajah Bulsey, Shirl Curly, Lekeisha Ryan, Christine James and Kaiya Blackley.
They were chosen to go because they come to school every day and do the right thing at school every day.
The Catherine Freeman Foundation and Cottage by the Sea helped make the holiday happen for us.
The holiday really was an incredible experience and we all have memories that will last a life time.
First things first, Melbourne is COLD!!!
Not that we got much time to complain about it as we went snorkelling in Port Phillip Bay on our first day (freezing cold water), and on the second day we went surfing in the ocean (again freezing cold water).
Other highlights included having Cathy Freeman stay overnight at the Cottage with us, visiting a wildlife sanctuary, going shopping at Westfield Geelong and shopping at the Queen Victoria Markets – we loved Melbourne Shopping!
On the last night of our holiday we travelled into Melbourne City and we got all dressed up to go to the Catherine Freeman Foundation Ball.
It was at a posh hotel in the city and there were lots of famous people there. Aside from our friend Cathy Freeman, we also met Ray Martin, Shelley Craft, Lane Beachley, Grant Hackett and Christine Anu, just to name a few.
Even amongst all of these famous people we felt like we were the special guests. As fun as our holiday was, we did miss our families and it was nice to return home to Palm.

Who and what is cooking at Bwgcolman?!

Bwgcolman Community school’s year 3/4 classes have been busy cooking up a storm or two in the kitchen this term.
Miss Kirsten, Miss Rhiannon and Miss Tanya’s class (MidA) led the way for their Kitchen Chemistry unit. Every week students have been learning different recipe procedures – and enjoying the outcomes.
We have made everything from play dough to damper and will be making pizza faces next! The students especially enjoy creating things that they can eat.
Here are some of the things students enjoyed the most about the recipes:
Alfred Ryan liked rubbing the butter into the flour with his fingers while making damper.Tarrisha Baira liked cracking eggs.Zareese Baira loved to knead dough.
Hannah Gorringe enjoyed measuring the tablespoons of butter.
Dianne Fulford enjoyed carefully measuring the dry ingredients and Veronica Pompey liked pouring in the liquids.Everyone loved mixing all the ingredients together!
For the remainder of the term the students will be deciding which recipe’s they would like to do – among the suggestions were cakes, sausage rolls, turtle and cupcakes.
We’ll see what goodies we end up creating!

WhooHoo!!! Many many thanks go out to Christian College for their great donation of 30 computers to the school 
Our kids can now use machines in every room that actually work.
The College also donated heaps of clothes to the church as well as books and resources. The clothes have come just in time for winter.

Regional Cross Country

Regional Cross Country Competition 26th May 2009
On Tuesday a small group of high school students from Bwgcolman attended the regional cross country competition in Townsville.
The competition attracts schools from right across our region including from Proserpine, Charters Towers and Bowen. Each race had around 100 competitors.
Our students performed well, with most finishing mid field in very competitive races. I am still waiting for official results.
Moira Murray from Grade 5 also came along after being selected the previous week to represent the Townsville District. Moira placed ninth overall, an excellent result.
If you see the following students around school or the community, congratulate them on their performance and the fantastic way that they represented our school at such a big event.

Grade 1 and 2

Miss Yolanda’s grade 1 and 2 class has been doing great things with the story book they are reading.
This book is called, Dolphin Rescue. And it tells the story of how one dolphin saves its friend who has been caught in a fishing net. This story, or “text,” is the means of having the children exposed to a huge amount of new words and phrases in School English.
It is essential part of their buid up to starting to do their own writing. The book was especially chosen as it is about the sea, a subject our Palm Island children already know a lot about!
Miss Yolanda is using the well tried and tested Walking Talking Texts program.This language acquisition program has been used extensively in indigenous schools in the NT and Qld for the last twenty five years. It really works!
The class is coming ahead in leaps and bounds and Miss Yolanda, and team teacher Miss Latoya, are thrillled with the program’s success. They are using this story as the jumping off point for learning about sea animals, then they are comparing these beautiful known sea creatures with animals that live in other environments, such as forests.
Walk into this excitingly decorated classroom and you could soon imagine you were swimming underwater with dolphins and sharks or prowling through dense fores watching out for lions and elephants! The kids love it.
Here are some of the things the kids already know:
“Seahorses have spikes on their heads.” (Maya)
“Dolphins can swim very fast and they can leap more than two metres out of the ocean.” (Maurice)
“Dolphins are mammals, not fish. They feed their babies breasdt milk.” (Shauntae)
“Seahorses have their babies live, not from eggs.” (Stella)
“Seahorses are fish and they swim straight. Seahorse daddies can carry baby seahorses in a special pouch.” (Craig)
“Dolphins swim in family groups called pods.” (Duran)

School art shows promise of what’s to come

Term One of 2009 has had a great start to the new school year, and been an exciting time in the art department.
Year eight students have been drawing traditional Indigenous artefacts and exploring pencil and charcoal techniques, with some amazing results.
The year nine class has been learning about portraits and chose one of their favourite music artists to draw. The year ten class has been very busy this term with their first aid certificates and TAFE courses, but they have been exploring the theme of fire, in relation to the Victorian bushfire that happened earlier this year.
This term students will be exploring different painting styles from history and I am sure the students will have another successful term.
