About BCS

a view of our island

Situated 70km across the water from Townsville North Queensland, Bwgcolman Community School is nestled in between the beach and the mountains in beautiful Palm Island

The Bwgcolman (Bukaman) name came about from the history of the community. Aborigines from about 42 tribes were re-settled on Palm Island in order to remove them from pastoral land.

These people and their descendants became collectively known as "boo-roo-goo-man", meaning all the people of Palm Island. A Palm Islander on the mainland could call "boo-roo-goo-man", (Bwgcolman) to a fellow islander as a method of recognition, or identification.

Our school changed it's name to Bwgcolman Community School in 1994 to better reflect the needs and aspirations of the community.

We have around 400 students.
